After Man
2022
Beit Berl college, School of Art
This body of work draws inspiration from the speculative zoological theory presented in Dougal Dixon’s book After Man: A Zoology of the Future (1981), in which the author, a zoologist, imagines how new forms of life might evolve on Earth long after the extinction of humankind. In Dixon’s vision, nature continues to adapt and transform, evolving species that replace and reinterpret those known today - a poetic yet unsettling reflection on evolution without human dominance.
In my works, I explore this idea as both a scientific and philosophical proposition. Through hybrid forms and surreal ecosystems, I examine humanity’s relationship with nature, its transformative and destructive impact on the environment, and the blurred boundary between the organic and the artificial. The figures and environments that emerge suggest a post-human landscape, where the line separating human, animal, and machine becomes fluid.
These works contemplate the legacy of human technology - whether it will vanish, merge with nature, or give rise to new forms of life. They also echo contemporary anxieties surrounding ecological collapse, artificial intelligence, and the Anthropocene - a world simultaneously created and endangered by human hands. Ultimately, the series reflects on the tension between creation and extinction, and the fragile balance between life, evolution, and the imagination of what might come after man.
